"The rattling, putt-putt or puff-puff boat is a toy boat with water impulse propulsion (steam jet propulsion, pulsed waterjet). The simple motor manages without moving parts like pistons, valves or wheels. The energy source is a candle or other heat source. At the stern of the boat two pipes protrude below the waterline, side by side and parallel. Water is sucked in through the pipes and expelled again.
The characteristic rattling sound of the boat, which gives the boat its name, is not directly caused by the evaporation process, but by a special construction of the evaporator: The upper side is formed from spring steel sheet as a crackling frog, which jumps back and forth during the rapid pressure changes and produces a cracking sound each time."
